Long before Sudoku had a name, there was a simpler square.
Take a grid. Arrange the same symbols so that each appears once in every row and once in every column. Mathematicians call this a Latin square.
These squares are centuries old. Leonhard Euler studied them in the eighteenth century. At first glance, a Latin square already looks a lot like a finished Sudoku.
But look inside the thicker borders. Sudoku asks each 3×3 box to contain every digit once too. That missing rule changes the puzzle and every deduction that follows.
The resemblance is real. The missing rule matters.
In 1979, the missing rule appears on a magazine page.
A reader opens Dell Pencil Puzzles & Word Games and finds a new puzzle called Number Place.
The instructions combine the three checks we know today. Use the digits 1 to 9 once in every row, every column, and every small nine-cell square. The modern puzzle has arrived.
One mystery remains: the puzzle has no byline. Years later, puzzle historian Will Shortz notices that retired architect Howard Garns appears in the contributor lists whenever Number Place appears. Garns is the most likely creator, but no signed proof has been found.
The modern Sudoku now exists. It just does not have its famous name yet.
The puzzle reaches Japan. Here, it finds its name.
Five years later, an American puzzle crosses the Pacific and enters the workshop of Nikoli.
Nikoli says it found Number Place in an American magazine and introduced it to Japanese readers in 1984. The editors called it Sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru, roughly “digits must remain single.” The long title soon became Sudoku.
Nikoli changes more than the name. In 1986, it asks puzzle makers to arrange the starting clues in a symmetrical pattern. Symmetry does not solve the grid. It gives the opening position balance and a recognisable human touch.
Japan did not invent the grid. It gave the puzzle an identity.
Then one newspaper turns the puzzle into a daily habit.
Wayne Gould discovers Sudoku in Japan. He takes the idea home and spends years building a program that can make new grids.
The retired Hong Kong judge then brings those grids to British newspapers. In November 2004, The Times gives one a place on the page.
Readers take to it. Other newspapers follow. The digits need no translation, so the puzzle moves easily from country to country. An American grid returns to the West with a Japanese name and a new visual craft.
The rules fit in a few lines. That makes the puzzle remarkably easy to carry around the world.
Two years later, the quiet grid has a world championship.
In March 2006, 85 solvers from 22 countries arrive in Lucca, Italy, for the first World Sudoku Championship.
They do not solve only the classic 9×9 grid. The event includes 18 variants, with diagonal, irregular, and odd/even puzzles among them. Each version keeps the familiar grid and adds a new rule.
Today Sudoku lives on paper and screens. People solve alone at breakfast, compare handmade creations online, or race under competition rules. The setting changes, but one promise remains: every valid move must have a reason.
Every variant adds a rule. Every solution still depends on proof.
